Left Edge Theatre in Santa Rosa is staging a production of Jackie Sibblies Drury's challenging play "We Are Proud to Present...", a meta-theatrical work that confronts the audience and asks them to confront themselves. The play, directed by Skylar Evans, follows a group of actors as they workshop a presentation about an obscure genocide of the Herero peoples of Namibia by the colonizing Germans. The ensemble cast delivers strong performances, with standout work from Isiah Carter, Thomas Peterson, Sam Minnifield, Nate Musser, Maddi Scarborough, and Lexus Fletcher.
Why it matters
In a theater scene often focused on safe, classic productions, Left Edge Theatre continues to lead the charge in producing relevant, meaningful works that ask more of their audience than just passive observation. "We Are Proud to Present..." encourages the audience to participate in crucial dialogues about how to be better humans.
The details
Drury's play is an intense, meta piece of art that is intended to confront, expose and pummel the audience. Using kitschy props, movement, dance, song, pantomiming, puppetry and drumming, the actors fall into scene immersion "like they're in a trance." The script deconstructs the actor's process while revealing the person beneath the artist.
- The show runs at The California in Santa Rosa through March 8.
