Snap Inc. has created a standalone subsidiary called Specs Inc. to focus on the development and launch of its upcoming consumer augmented reality glasses. The new subsidiary will provide greater operational focus, enable new partnerships and capital flexibility, and allow Specs to grow as a distinct brand separate from Snap's other products. Specs users won't need a Snapchat account, and the company is actively hiring for nearly 100 open roles worldwide as it prepares to debut the AR glasses later in 2026.
Why it matters
Snap's move to create a dedicated Specs subsidiary underscores the growing importance of augmented reality hardware as a strategic focus for the company. With Meta Platforms also planning to launch its own AR glasses in 2027, Snap is looking to get a head start and establish Specs as a distinct brand and product line. The independence of the Specs subsidiary could also enable new funding and partnership opportunities as Snap works to bring its consumer AR glasses to market.
The details
The new Specs Inc. subsidiary will operate similarly to Alphabet's Waymo self-driving unit, giving the smart eyewear team more autonomy. Specs will feature an intelligence system with contextual awareness capabilities to detect physical objects around the user in real-time. The consumer Specs glasses will build on Snap's previous Spectacles device that was made available to developers in 2024, including features like hand gesture controls and the Snap OS operating system. Developers are already building games and other applications for the upcoming Specs glasses.
