Two teenage suspects, 17-year-old Jackson Sullivan of San Luis Obispo and 16-year-old Skylar LaPaille of Morro Bay, have been arrested for a violent home invasion in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 31st. Posing as delivery workers, the teens allegedly forced their way into the home, restrained the couple inside, and assaulted the man in an attempt to steal $66 million in cryptocurrency. The teens were later apprehended by police and are now facing multiple charges as adults, including kidnapping, burglary, and aggravated assault.
Why it matters
This case highlights the growing threat of cryptocurrency-related crimes, as digital currencies become more mainstream and valuable. The brazen home invasion tactics used by the suspects also raise concerns about the safety of residents, especially those perceived to have significant cryptocurrency holdings.
The details
According to investigators, the two teenage suspects met a month earlier and were allegedly extorted by individuals known only as 'Red' and '8' who they had connected with on the Signal app. The adults reportedly sent the teens $1,000 to purchase supplies for disguises and restraining devices to be used in the home invasion. When the teens forced their way into the Scottsdale home, they restrained the couple with duct tape while the couple's son hid and called 911. Police arrived to find the woman screaming and one of the teens assaulting the man in an attempt to get him to reveal the cryptocurrency. The teens then fled the scene but were arrested shortly afterwards. In addition to the violent home invasion, the teens were also found to be in possession of a 3D-printed gun, though it contained no ammunition and may not have been functional.
