The San Francisco Giants have stumbled out of the gate in 2026, losing their first three games of the season while scoring only one run total. This dubious start has put new manager Tony Vitello in the record books, as the Giants are just the second team in MLB history to lose their first three home games while scoring no more than one run per game.
Why it matters
The Giants were expected to be a contender this season, so this dismal start has raised early concerns about the team's offense and pitching. Vitello, in his first year as Giants manager, is now facing pressure to turn things around quickly before the team falls too far behind in the NL West race.
The details
In the Giants' three losses to open the season, they were outscored 13-1 by the New York Yankees. Across 27 innings, the Giants are hitting just .143 as a team with a 4.00 ERA. The only other team to start a season 0-3 at home while scoring one run or fewer per game was the 2016 San Diego Padres, who went on to finish last in the division that year.
- The Giants lost 7-0 to the Yankees on Opening Night.
- They were then blown out 3-0 in Game 2 of the series.
- In Game 3, the Giants finally scored a run but still lost 3-1.

What they’re saying
“The Giants are the 2nd team in MLB history to lose their first 3 games of the season, all at home, while scoring no more than 1 run, joining the 2016 Padres.”

What’s next
The Giants will look to get their first win of the season when they hit the road to face the San Diego Padres for a three-game series, before returning home to host the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.
The takeaway
This disastrous start to the season for the Giants and new manager Tony Vitello has raised early concerns about the team's ability to compete in the NL West this year. While it's still very early, the Giants will need to turn things around quickly to avoid falling too far behind their division rivals.
