The San Francisco Giants were just one out away from a perfect game and one strike away from a no-hitter before the bid was broken up in their 7-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Why it matters

Perfect games and no-hitters are extremely rare feats in Major League Baseball, with only 23 perfect games and 314 no-hitters in the sport's history. The Giants' near-misses highlight how close they came to achieving one of baseball's most prestigious individual pitching accomplishments.

The details

Giants pitcher Logan Webb was dominant, retiring the first 26 Brewers batters he faced before giving up a single with two outs in the 9th inning, ending his bid for a perfect game. Webb then struck out the next batter, but a walk to the following hitter ended his no-hit attempt as well.

The takeaway

The Giants' near-perfect and no-hit bids demonstrate the incredible skill and focus required to achieve these rare feats in baseball, and how even the best pitchers can come agonizingly close without completing them.
