Interior designer Noz Nozawa was tasked with decorating a Victorian home in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood for a young couple. Embracing the home's historic charm, Nozawa incorporated a vibrant color palette, bold patterns, and a mix of new and vintage furnishings to create a space that feels both timeless and fresh.

Why it matters

This project showcases how a skilled designer can breathe new life into a historic home by blending the old and the new. Nozawa's approach demonstrates that bold, colorful design can work seamlessly in a traditional Victorian setting, appealing to modern homeowners while still honoring the property's architectural heritage.

The details

Nozawa's design features exuberant colors and lively patterns throughout, including rosy-pink walls in the open living and dining areas and a vibrant botanical wallpaper on the ceiling. In the dining room, she designed a pair of shapely built-in cabinets inspired by the wardrobe character from Beauty and the Beast, painting them in complementary shades of blue. Upstairs, a sage green line-art mural by local artist Caroline Lizarraga connects the primary bedroom and adjoining reading nook, while the office features fantastical floral wallpaper. The nursery, which was originally the wife's office, is wrapped in a periwinkle forest mural. In the attic media room, a rainbow-patterned rug electrifies the aubergine walls.

  • Nozawa completed the project shortly before the homeowners welcomed a baby.
