Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled a new battery pack called the Blade Battery 2.0 that can charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes even in cold weather. However, this ultra-fast charging capability is only possible when paired with BYD's new proprietary 'Flash Charging' EV charging stations, which can deliver up to 1.5 megawatts of power.
Why it matters
BYD is hoping this new fast-charging technology will give it an edge over competitors in China's rapidly evolving EV market, where automakers are racing to roll out new and improved electric vehicles. The ability to charge quickly could help address one of the key drawbacks of EVs compared to gas-powered cars. However, the requirement to use BYD's own charging infrastructure may limit the technology's broader adoption.
The details
The Blade Battery 2.0 system uses lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is less energy-dense than other battery types but also less expensive. To achieve the ultra-fast charging times, BYD has also developed a new 1.5 MW 'Flash Charging' EV charger. This charger uses overhead cables to serve vehicles on either side, making plugging in easier. BYD says it has already built 4,200 Flash Charging stations in China, with plans to add 16,000 more by the end of 2026.

What’s next
BYD plans to have 16,000 Flash Charging stations installed in China by the end of 2026 to support the rollout of the Blade Battery 2.0 system.
The takeaway
BYD's new ultra-fast charging battery technology could give it a competitive edge in China's EV market, but the requirement to use BYD's proprietary charging infrastructure may limit its broader adoption. The company is betting that the charging speed advantages will outweigh the inconvenience of a closed charging network.
