In a recent interview, current Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo shared the story behind the bass solo in the band's classic instrumental track "Orion" from their 1986 album Master of Puppets. Trujillo revealed that the solo was originally intended to be a guitar solo by Kirk Hammett, but the late Cliff Burton ended up recording the bass part instead after Hammett was away from the studio.
Why it matters
This behind-the-scenes story provides insight into the creative process behind one of Metallica's most beloved and influential songs, highlighting the band's collaborative dynamic and the lasting impact of the late Cliff Burton's musical contributions.
The details
According to Trujillo, Hammett was supposed to play the solo on "Orion," but when he returned to the studio the next day, he found that Burton had already laid down the iconic bass part. Trujillo said Hammett "was away from the studio, came back the next day, and Cliff had laid the track. He played the solo there and there was no solo for Kirk." Trujillo noted that while Hammett "doesn't get enough solos," Burton's bass solo ended up being the perfect fit for the track.
