Stephen Sherrill, the appointed District 2 supervisor in San Francisco, has raised more than twice as much campaign funding as his challenger Lori Brooke ahead of a June special election. Sherrill, a former Bloomberg staffer, received $223,279 in contributions as of December 31, while Brooke, a longtime community organizer, raised $100,756 in the same period.
Why it matters
The District 2 race, which covers the affluent Marina, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow and Presidio Heights neighborhoods, is one of two special elections in San Francisco this June that will determine who fills out the remainder of the current term. Sherrill's fundraising advantage highlights the power of incumbency and connections to city leadership, while Brooke's grassroots campaign represents an alternative vision for the district.
The details
Sherrill's fundraising includes $17,200 from a political action committee called GrowSF, which has ties to Mayor Daniel Lurie, an ally of Sherrill. Much of that PAC money comes from Sherrill's own family members, including his parents and a relative named William Sherrill. Sherrill has also received donations from other prominent San Francisco figures like venture capitalist Ron Conway. In contrast, Brooke's funding is entirely from individual donors giving less than $500 each, without any outside PAC support.
- The latest campaign finance filings are from December 31, 2025.
- The special election in District 2 is scheduled for June 2, 2026.
The players
Stephen Sherrill
The appointed District 2 supervisor, a former staffer to New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg who was appointed by outgoing San Francisco Mayor London Breed.
Lori Brooke
A longtime community organizer challenging Sherrill for the District 2 seat, which represents the Marina, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow and Presidio Heights neighborhoods.
GrowSF
A political pressure group that has set up a PAC to support Sherrill's campaign, with much of the funding coming from Sherrill's own family members.
Daniel Lurie
The current mayor of San Francisco, who is an ally of Sherrill.
Ron Conway
A prominent San Francisco venture capitalist and moderate power broker who has donated to Sherrill's campaign.
What they’re saying
“Fifty years is such an accomplishment in San Francisco, especially with the way the city has changed over the years.”
— Gordon Edgar, grocery employee (Instagram)
What’s next
The special election in District 2 is scheduled for June 2, 2026, where voters will decide whether Sherrill keeps his seat or if Brooke wins the district.
The takeaway
This race highlights the power of incumbency and connections to city leadership, as Sherrill's fundraising advantage over his grassroots challenger Brooke reflects. However, Brooke's campaign represents an alternative vision for the affluent District 2 neighborhoods, focused on community organizing and opposing recent housing upzoning efforts.
