The San Diego County Sheriff's Office is hosting a gun buyback event this weekend where residents can exchange handguns, rifles, shotguns, and assault weapons for gift cards ranging from $100 to $200. Free firearm lock boxes and trigger locks will also be distributed at the event, which takes place on April 18 at the San Marcos Sheriff's Station.
Why it matters
Gun buyback programs are a controversial but common approach used by law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of privately-owned firearms in circulation, with the goal of improving public safety. Critics argue the programs have limited impact, while proponents say every gun removed from the streets can potentially save a life.
The details
At the event, people who donate handguns, rifles and shotguns will receive $100 gift cards, while those who trade in assault weapons will receive $200 gift cards. The firearms must be in working order, unloaded, and placed in the trunk of the vehicle dropping them off. All collected weapons will be destroyed.
- The gun safety event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 18, 2026.
