The San Francisco Giants finally broke through for their first run of the 2026 season, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the New York Yankees 3-1. After being held scoreless for the first 20 innings, the Giants got on the board in the 3rd inning when Jung Hoo Lee scored on a single by Matt Chapman. However, the Giants' rally attempts were repeatedly stifled, including a double play that ended a promising 6th inning threat. Despite out-hitting the Yankees 9-7, the Giants couldn't capitalize and suffered their third straight loss to start the season.
Why it matters
The Giants' offensive struggles to open the season have been a major concern for the team and its fans. While scoring their first run is a small step in the right direction, the Giants will need to find a way to sustain rallies and capitalize on scoring opportunities if they hope to turn things around and compete in the NL West.
The details
The Giants' first run came in the 3rd inning when Jung Hoo Lee led off with a double and scored on a single by Matt Chapman. However, the Yankees quickly regained the lead in the top of the 4th on a 2-out RBI double by Ben Rice off Giants starter Tyler Mahle. The Yankees then extended their lead to 3-1 in the 5th on a solo home run by Aaron Judge off reliever Ryan Borucki. The Giants had several chances to rally, including loading the bases with no outs in the 6th, but they were unable to capitalize, hitting into a double play to end the threat.
- The Giants' scoreless streak to start the season reached 20 innings before they scored their first run in the 3rd inning.
- The Yankees took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 4th inning on Ben Rice's RBI double.
- Aaron Judge extended the Yankees' lead to 3-1 with a solo home run in the 5th inning.

What they’re saying
“Boy it's time for a Gatorade bath, huh?”

What’s next
The Giants will look to build on their first run of the season when they travel to San Diego to take on the Padres on Monday.
The takeaway
While the Giants' offense showed some signs of life, their inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and sustain rallies ultimately doomed them to another loss. If the Giants hope to turn their season around, they'll need to find a way to consistently produce runs and limit the damage from opposing offenses.
