A Mira Mesa man has been sentenced to five years in prison for using explosives in an unsuccessful attempt to break into an ATM outside a Rancho Bernardo bank in June 2024. Son Thanh Nguyen pleaded guilty to the crime, admitting he drove to the First Citizens Bank branch early in the morning and placed an improvised explosive device into the ATM's cash dispenser slot, destroying the machine.
Why it matters
The use of explosives to target ATMs is an uncommon but concerning tactic that can pose serious risks to public safety. This case highlights the need for robust security measures at financial institutions and the potential consequences for those who attempt such crimes.
The details
Surveillance footage from the bank was used to track the license plate of the vehicle Nguyen drove to and from the scene. About two months later, investigators searched Nguyen's home and found chemicals and equipment used to construct the explosive device, as well as clothes consistent with those worn during the attempt. Nguyen was originally also charged with a similar, alleged attempted break-in of an ATM outside a California Coast Credit Union in University Heights, but only pleaded guilty to the Rancho Bernardo incident.
