Construction has begun on a 2.8-mile, $44.5 million SANDAG project to add protected bike lanes, traffic-calming measures, and bus boarding platforms along University Avenue in San Diego. The improvements are designed to enhance safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers in a corridor that has seen a higher frequency of collisions.
Why it matters
The University Avenue corridor is part of SANDAG's Safety Focus Network, which identifies areas with more frequent collisions. The project aims to make the busy thoroughfare safer for all users through infrastructure upgrades like protected intersections and separated bikeways.
The details
The University Bikeway project will run along University Avenue between Estrella Avenue and 69th Street, as well as along Estrella Avenue between University and Orange avenues. Improvements include traffic-calming measures, buffered bike lanes, high-visibility pavement markings, and separated bikeways to protect people walking and biking from vehicle traffic. The project will also add bus boarding platforms at 14 intersections.
- Construction on the project began in March 2026.
- The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
The players
SANDAG
The San Diego Association of Governments, the regional planning agency overseeing the University Bikeway project.
Omar Atayee
Principal engineer at SANDAG.
What they’re saying
“This project features protected intersections, which really help people who want to bike to use this roadway. This area is also part of our Safety Focus Network. We see a higher frequency of collisions, so this allows us to really take a corridor that's heavily used by multiple people and make it safer.”
— Omar Atayee, Principal engineer at SANDAG (NBC San Diego)
What’s next
The approximately $44.5 million project is funded through a combination of federal, state, and local sources.
The takeaway
The University Bikeway project is a significant investment in improving safety and accessibility for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers along a busy San Diego corridor. By incorporating protected infrastructure and traffic-calming measures, the project aims to create a more balanced and secure transportation network for all users.
