A San Diego bishop, Emanuel Shaleta from Saint Peter's Chaldean in East County, has been charged with 15 felony counts, including eight counts of embezzlement, eight counts of money laundering, and one count of aggravated white-collar crime. Prosecutors allege Shaleta stole at least $270,000 from his church, which he claimed he gave away to the needy, and that he regularly traveled to a brothel named the Hong Kong Gentleman's Club in Tijuana's Zona Norte red-light district.
Why it matters
The case against Shaleta has raised concerns about financial accountability and oversight within the church, as well as the bishop's alleged personal misconduct. The charges also highlight the broader issue of clergy abuse and misconduct, which has been an ongoing problem for the Catholic Church.
The details
Prosecutors argue that Shaleta is a flight risk because police caught him at the airport with thousands in cash, and he was on his way to Germany. Shaleta's legal representation said the suspicious flight was pre-planned and the bishop wasn't fleeing the charges, but the prosecutor did not believe them. Over $427,000 is unaccounted for, and the true number could be as high as $1 million. Shaleta has spent the last four nights in jail as he has been unable to make the $125,000 in bail, and he is due back in court next month for a preliminary hearing in his case. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
- Shaleta was arrested on Thursday.
- Shaleta pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday.
