Westview High School's girls soccer coach Peter Stogsdill earned his 500th career win on Wednesday after the sixth-seeded Wolverines defeated No. 11 Granite Hills 2-1 in the CIF San Diego Section Division 1 playoffs. Sophomore Ally Damron scored both of Westview's goals in the first half, while Granite Hills junior Brooklyn Spencer scored in the second half to make it a one-goal game. The Wolverines will now face No. 3 San Dieguito Academy in the Division 1 quarterfinals on Friday.

Why it matters

Stogsdill's 500th win is a significant milestone, as he joins just three other San Diego girls soccer coaches to reach that career victory mark. The win also keeps Westview's playoff run alive as they look to advance further in the postseason.

The details

Stogsdill had been sitting at 499 career wins for nearly two weeks after losing his final two regular-season games. The 500th win came in dramatic fashion, with Damron scoring both of Westview's goals in the first half. Damron, who is normally a defender, took advantage of a free kick in the 13th minute and then scored again in the 37th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Elle McMurrey. Granite Hills junior Brooklyn Spencer scored in the second half to make it a one-goal game, but Westview was able to hold on for the victory.

What they’re saying

“It's more for the kids. We've worked all season. It's been one where we struggled to (win). We've had seven ties, so every game is like this. I'm proud of them for really stepping up and finding a way.”

— Peter Stogsdill, Westview High School girls soccer coach (San Diego Union-Tribune)

“We had a game where I had to take a free kick, and I lofted it. So (Coach) Peter's like, 'Just shoot it so hard, don't loft it.' So, I just used all my power.”

— Ally Damron (San Diego Union-Tribune)
