World No. 6 Xander Schauffele, World No. 7 J.J. Spaun and 2025 SDSU graduate Justin Hastings all missed the cut Friday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Open, leaving the weekend empty of any Aztec representation. Despite clear skies and minimal wind, the three former Aztecs struggled to capitalize on the more manageable Torrey Pines course conditions.
Why it matters
The poor showing from the Aztecs means a little more than just a few missed cuts, as the Farmers' sponsorship of the tournament is ending after this year, leaving the future of Torrey Pines on the PGA TOUR up in the air. Many players feel that San Diego should always be a stop on the schedule, including local favorite Xander Schauffele.
The details
Schauffele, a two-time major champion, made his return to San Diego after missing the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open due to a rib injury. He started off shaky in the first round but made a late charge, only to miss the cut by a single stroke. Spaun, the 2012 SDSU alum who has risen to World No. 7, struggled to find a rhythm in the first round and couldn't recover in the second. Hastings, the 2025 SDSU graduate playing in his first Farmers Insurance Open on a sponsor exemption, put together a solid effort but ultimately came up short of making the weekend.
- Schauffele's streak of 72 straight made cuts, and the PGA's former longest active streak, would be brought to an end.
- The Farmers' sponsorship of the tournament is ending after this year's event.
The players
Xander Schauffele
A two-time major champion and World No. 6 golfer, Schauffele is a 2015 graduate of San Diego State University.
J.J. Spaun
The 2012 SDSU alum has risen to World No. 7 after placing second at The Players, winning the U.S. Open, and competing in the Ryder Cup.
Justin Hastings
A 2025 SDSU graduate, Hastings was given a sponsor exemption to make his first appearance in the Farmers Insurance Open.
What they’re saying
“It's going to be nice to have the weekend off. I don't like missing cuts … but it's actually kind of nice, to be honest, if I was going to pick a spot. I get to hang out with my family.”
— Xander Schauffele (The Daily Aztec)
“I think getting off the tee is a big hurdle, I guess you can say. The rough is really intense and thick and the course is long, so hitting fairways is really important.”
— J.J. Spaun (The Daily Aztec)
“I just know he's a great player. He's killing it on the Korn Ferry already and contending. He's just going to grow and he's going to just get really good and I'm excited to see his progress.”
— J.J. Spaun (The Daily Aztec)
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
This case highlights growing concerns in the community about repeat offenders released on bail, raising questions about bail reform, public safety on SF streets, and if any special laws to govern autonomous vehicles in residential and commercial areas.
