George's at the Cove, a popular restaurant in La Jolla, California, is reopening its Ocean Terrace rooftop dining area and bar on February 6th after a three-month closure for remodeling. The renovations include a new foundation, flooring, glass wall, lighting, heaters, and furnishings, though the restaurant aims to maintain the space's existing magical ambiance and million-dollar ocean views.

Why it matters

George's at the Cove is an iconic dining destination in the La Jolla community, and the Ocean Terrace rooftop has been a key part of the restaurant's appeal for over 30 years. The remodel aims to modernize and enhance the space while preserving its beloved character, ensuring the restaurant can continue serving locals and visitors for decades to come.

The details

The renovated Ocean Terrace includes a new foundation and flooring, a new 4-foot-tall perimeter glass wall, new umbrella plan with LED lighting, new permanent heaters, new wall sconces, new dining tables, and a new host stand. The main dining area still seats 120 guests. Executive Chef Trey Foshee says the goal was to make improvements that would be "mostly seamless to blend in with what we already had."

What they’re saying

“Much like the renovations of two baseball cathedrals in Fenway Park and Wrigley Field in recent years, our improvements are meant to be mostly seamless to blend in with what we already had.”

— Trey Foshee, Executive chef and partner (Patch.com)

“You just don't mess with something magical. While the price tag of our remodel eclipsed the seven-figure mark, guests may not even notice everything. And that's OK, especially with that million-dollar view of the water they enjoy that has never changed.”

— Trey Foshee, Executive chef and partner (Patch.com)

“It's been an incredible ride for more than 41 years, and we hope our investment ensures that the restaurant will remain a go-to spot for the next several decades. We always want to provide a special place for both locals and visitors to our great city.”

— George Hauer, Founder (Patch.com)
