The San Antonio Spurs are playing two home games in Austin, Texas instead of San Antonio during their annual Rodeo Road Trip when their home arena is taken over. This serves a dual purpose of keeping the team closer to home and expanding the Spurs' brand and fanbase in the regional hub of Austin.
Why it matters
The Spurs' Rodeo Road Trip is a long-standing tradition, but playing some home games in Austin is a newer strategy to keep the team closer to home and grow their regional fanbase in a major Texas city outside of San Antonio.
The details
The Spurs are playing the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night and the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night, both at the Moody Center in Austin. This is the second time in three nights the Spurs have played in Austin during their Rodeo Road Trip, when their home arena is taken over for other events.
- The Spurs are playing the Kings on Saturday, February 22, 2026.
- The Spurs played the Suns on Thursday, February 20, 2026.
The players
James Brandon James
Austin-based senior vice president of strategic growth and deputy general counsel for Spurs Sports & Entertainment.
What they’re saying
“We're proud to see this game evolve into more than just basketball — it's about bringing people together through world-class competition, community impact and shared experiences that reflect the energy and diversity of this region. We're excited to continue building on this tradition at Moody Center and deepening our connection with fans across the I-35 corridor and throughout this entire region.”
— James Brandon James, Austin-based senior vice president of strategic growth and deputy general counsel for Spurs Sports & Entertainment
What’s next
The Spurs will continue their Rodeo Road Trip with additional games in other cities before returning to San Antonio.
The takeaway
The Spurs' decision to play select home games in Austin during their annual Rodeo Road Trip highlights their efforts to expand their regional fanbase and bring the team closer to home during an extended road trip, rather than being away from San Antonio for an extended period.
