While the Super Bowl has been held in California several times, there are a number of cities across the United States that have yet to host the big game despite having a hometown NFL team. These cities include Baltimore, Buffalo, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Green Bay, Kansas City, Foxborough, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Nashville, and Landover.

Why it matters

Hosting the Super Bowl is a major event that brings significant economic and publicity benefits to the host city. The lack of a Super Bowl in these cities, despite having professional football teams, suggests there may be factors such as stadium quality, hotel capacity, or other logistical challenges that have prevented them from being selected as host sites so far.

The details

The NFL's Vice President of Events Strategy, Matt Shapiro, explains that the process of choosing a Super Bowl host city begins years in advance, with the city's weather, stadium quality, and availability of hotels and nearby venues being the main deciding factors. Miami and New Orleans have hosted the most Super Bowls with 11 each, followed by Pasadena and Tampa with 5 each, and Atlanta, San Diego, Houston, and Glendale with 3 each.

  • Super Bowl LX will be played on February 8, 2026 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
  • Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for February 14, 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The takeaway

The lack of a Super Bowl in certain cities with NFL teams highlights the competitive and selective nature of the host selection process, which prioritizes factors like stadium quality, hotel capacity, and other logistical considerations. While these cities may have passionate fan bases, hosting the Super Bowl requires meeting a high bar set by the NFL.
