An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for the Coachella Valley area through 8 p.m. this evening as a large upper-level ridge of high pressure continues to bring sinking air over the Southwest, causing Valley temperatures to once again exceed 100 degrees this afternoon. On-shore winds will also become gusty this afternoon into the evening hours as upper-level clouds slowly thicken.
Why it matters
The extreme heat poses a risk to public health and safety, especially for vulnerable populations. It also strains the power grid and can impact local businesses and outdoor activities.
The details
The high pressure system is causing temperatures to soar well above normal for this time of year. Highs are expected to reach the lower 100s, with gusty winds adding to the discomfort. As the high pressure system begins to weaken, temperatures will start to come down slightly, but will still remain well above average.
