The Corona del Mar boys basketball team lost to Crespi 82-70 in their first pool-play game of the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs. Corona del Mar, who entered the game with a 27-1 record and 12-game winning streak, had trouble matching Crespi's size and athleticism. Crespi led by as many as 15 points in the second half and Corona del Mar was unable to cut the deficit to single digits after that.
Why it matters
The Open Division of the CIF Southern Section playoffs features the top teams in the region, so this loss shows that Corona del Mar, despite their impressive regular season record, still has work to do to compete with the elite programs. The Sea Kings have another tough matchup coming up against the top-ranked team in the state, Sierra Canyon.
The details
Corona del Mar junior guard Maxwell Scott scored 35 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Crespi's size and athleticism. Crespi, coached by former Lakers player Derek Fisher, got big games from Isaiah Barnes (24 points) and Jasiah Williams (23 points). Corona del Mar senior Oliver Nakra added 15 points in the loss.

What they’re saying
“Too many points in the paint. I thought their athleticism sort of overwhelmed us. We saw them live on Wednesday (at Sierra Canyon) and they were about an inch taller than they looked on film and a split second faster than they looked on film.”
— Jason Simco, Corona del Mar head coach
“He's the motor that makes us go. We're not the most athletically gifted team, but we go how he goes.”
