Tesla Unveils First Public Megacharger Station for Semi Trucks

New 750 kW charging hub in Ontario, California marks a major milestone for Tesla's electric semi-truck program.

Published on Mar. 9, 2026

Tesla has officially opened its first public Megacharger station for the Tesla Semi electric truck in Ontario, California. The new charging hub, located at a BP Pulse commercial charging depot, can deliver up to 750 kW of power to Tesla Semis, allowing them to be recharged in under 45 minutes. This marks a significant step forward for Tesla's heavy-duty electric trucking efforts as it lays the groundwork for the Semi to handle long-haul, interstate routes.

Why it matters

Until now, Tesla Semis have been limited to charging at private, closed-loop facilities. By deploying public Megacharger stations, Tesla is enabling the Semi to be used for long-haul trucking by providing the necessary charging infrastructure. This is a critical step in the commercialization of the Tesla Semi and the broader adoption of electric heavy-duty vehicles.

The details

The new Megacharger station is located at 4265 E Guasti Rd in Ontario, California, near the local airport. It features two 750 kW Tesla MCS (Megawatt Charging System) pull-through bays exclusively for the Tesla Semi, installed alongside four 400 kW CCS pull-through bays for other electric heavy-duty trucks. The MCS charging technology is proprietary to the Tesla Semi and cannot be used by other electric trucks. Tesla's goal is to eventually open the MCS bays to other brands, but for now they are only accessible to the Semi.

  • Tesla officially opened the first public Megacharger station on March 9, 2026.
  • Volume production of the Tesla Semi is targeted to begin at the expanded Giga Nevada facility in 2026.

The takeaway

The opening of Tesla's first public Megacharger station marks a significant milestone in the commercialization of the Tesla Semi and the broader shift towards electric heavy-duty vehicles. By providing the necessary high-powered charging infrastructure, Tesla is enabling the Semi to be used for long-haul trucking, which is crucial for widespread fleet adoption.
