The modern web development framework React, along with its mobile counterpart React Native and the JSX specification, have been contributed by Meta to the newly formed React Foundation. The React Foundation is now hosted under LF Projects, LLC, a subsidiary of the Linux Foundation, putting React alongside other major open-source projects like Kubernetes and Node.js under neutral governance.
Why it matters
React has become a critical part of the web infrastructure, with contributions coming from across the industry. Placing React under the neutral governance of the Linux Foundation ensures its long-term viability and independence from any single corporate owner, allowing the project to continue growing and evolving with input from the global developer community.
The details
The React Foundation was officially launched at the Linux Foundation Member Summit in Napa, California. Eight companies have joined as Platinum founding members, including Huawei, Meta, Expo, Software Mansion, Vercel, Callstack, Amazon, and Microsoft. The foundation will focus on funding maintainers, providing educational resources, and ensuring global accessibility for the React ecosystem. React's technical direction will remain independent from the foundation's board, with the core developers continuing to make decisions on the project's future.
- The React team announced their intent to form the foundation in October 2025.
