At 81 and in frail health, renowned land artist Michael Heizer has brought his signature monumental style indoors to Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea, New York. His exhibition 'Negative Sculpture' features two continuous 87.5-foot steel-lined trenches incised in the concrete floor, creating a more intimate and delicate take on his typically macho and expansive earthworks. The exhibition also includes 19 graph-paper drawings of Heizer's past large-scale sculptures and paintings.
Why it matters
Heizer is known for his ambitious, landscape-altering land art projects like 'City' and 'Double Negative,' which have transformed vast desert environments. This exhibition marks a shift as the artist, now in declining health, scales down his work to a more domestic, indoor setting, offering a new perspective on his iconic style.
The details
The centerpiece of the show, 'Convoluted Line A' and 'Convoluted Line B,' consists of two continuous 87.5-foot long steel-lined trenches, incised in a concrete floor and partly filled with brown gravel. The lines and shapes of the two pieces, presented side-by-side, have distinct personalities - 'A' features a trifurcating curve and looping figure-eights, while 'B' is dominated by a straight channel that loops back on itself. The exhibition also includes 19 graph-paper drawings of Heizer's past large-scale sculptures and paintings, such as 'Collapse,' a tumble of wood planks dropped in the Mojave Desert in 1968.
- The exhibition opened on March 12, 2026.
