Dignitaries from Marysville and Yuba City gathered on February 20th to rename and dedicate the 10th Street Bridge between the two cities in honor of prisoners of war and service members missing in action. The bridge now carries the official designation of POW/MIA Bridge. Army veteran and former prisoner of war Mike O'Connor addressed the attendees, speaking about the sacrifices of American soldiers and their families.
Why it matters
The dedication of the POW/MIA Bridge is a symbolic gesture to recognize the immense sacrifices made by American service members who were captured or went missing in action throughout history. This bridge serves as a permanent memorial to honor their service and the impact on their families.
The details
The bridge, which connects the Yuba and Sutter county seats, was renamed and dedicated during a ceremony at the Yuba City Council chambers. Army veteran and former POW Mike O'Connor spoke about his own experience of being held captive for five years, as well as the broader history of American prisoners of war and missing in action service members dating back to the Revolutionary War. After the ceremony, attendees crossed the bridge to the Yuba County Office of Education parking lot in Marysville, where select veterans signed a commemorative plaque that will be installed behind the new bridge sign.
- The bridge dedication ceremony took place on February 20, 2026.
- The effort to dedicate the bridge began in 2004 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Marysville.
