During the Super Bowl, Netflix aired the first teaser trailer for its upcoming spinoff series 'The Adventures of Cliff Booth', featuring Brad Pitt reprising his role as Cliff Booth from Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. The footage shows Booth admitting to Elizabeth Debicki's character that he helped Leonardo DiCaprio's Rick Dalton 'subdue the hippie intruders' at the end of Tarantino's film, and then teases a montage of new scenes set to the theme from 'Peter Gunn'.

Why it matters

The new 'Cliff Booth' series is based on the novel 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: A Novel' written by Tarantino, which expanded on the backstory and mythology of the Cliff Booth character. Fans of the original film will be eager to see more of Pitt's Oscar-winning performance in this spinoff, which is directed by David Fincher and also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Scott Caan, and JB Tadena.

The details

The teaser trailer shows Booth, with ice on his knee and shoulder, admitting to Elizabeth Debicki's character that he helped Rick Dalton 'subdue the hippie intruders' at the end of 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. The footage then cuts to a montage of new scenes set to the 'Peter Gunn' theme, including Booth and Debicki's character walking together, Carla Gugino's character at a Malibu beach house, what appear to be Asian gangsters carrying a sledgehammer, Booth inside a theater's projection room, a Blaxsploitation film being shown onscreen, and the exterior of Big Kahuna Burger. The trailer notably avoids showing any cigarettes, alcohol, nudity or cursing, with those elements being 'crudely scratched out' onscreen.

  • The events of 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' took place on February 8, 1969.

What they’re saying

“I love this script, but I'm still walking down the same ground I've already walked. It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I've got to not know what I'm doing again. I've got to be in uncharted territory.”

— Quentin Tarantino (The Church of Tarantino podcast)
