The Silicon Valley town of Los Gatos is getting a major grocery upgrade as a new, larger Whole Foods store is set to open next month. The new 40,039-square-foot grocery store will replace the existing 32-year-old Whole Foods location, which is less than a mile away and nearly half the size.
Why it matters
The town had outgrown the existing Whole Foods, and the new larger store will provide more options and amenities for the community. The new store is also seen as revitalizing a previously vacant property, strengthening the local economy.
The details
The new Whole Foods is located at 15650 Los Gatos Blvd., at the corner of Los Gatos-Almaden Road, and is scheduled to open on April 15. It will include more hot foods, seating, a coffee and smoothie bar, and other expanded offerings compared to the old 22,000-square-foot store at 15980 Los Gatos Blvd. The old store, which opened in 1994, will close when the new one debuts.

The players
Whole Foods
An American supermarket chain that specializes in organic and natural foods, owned by Amazon.
Rob Moore
The mayor of Los Gatos, California.
Sand Hill Property Company
The developer that proposed the new Whole Foods location and purchased the land for $15.1 million.
What they’re saying
“The town had begun to outgrow the existing, smaller Whole Foods, so this is a significant upgrade.”
— Rob Moore, Mayor of Los Gatos
“Los Gatos has always evolved while still protecting the things that make our town special. The new Whole Foods isn't replacing a historic building or changing the downtown. Rather, it's revitalizing a property that had been largely vacant for years.”
— Rob Moore, Mayor of Los Gatos
What’s next
The future tenant for the old Whole Foods location at 15980 Los Gatos Blvd. has not yet been publicly announced.
The takeaway
The new, larger Whole Foods store in Los Gatos represents an investment in the community's access to healthy and organic food options, while also revitalizing a previously vacant property and strengthening the local economy.
