Prosperity Market's vibrant mobile grocery trailer brings access to Black-owned brands and local produce to neighborhoods across Los Angeles.Los Angeles TodayProsperity Market, founded by former makeup and fashion industry veterans Carmen Dianne and Kara Still, is launching a 48-foot-long pink mobile grocery trailer that will begin traveling around Los Angeles County this spring. The trailer features packaged goods from Black-owned businesses, fresh produce from local Black farmers, and a built-in food truck where chefs can rent the space to cook. The goal is to provide access to Black-owned brands and support the local community.
Why it matters
Black business owners were disproportionately affected by the pandemic, with 41% suffering business losses in 2020. Prosperity Market aims to uplift Black-owned brands and provide greater access to their products in the Los Angeles area, which was the hardest hit for business closures in the country during the pandemic.
The details
The Prosperity Market trailer will feature two aisles of metal shelves stocked with packaged goods from Black-owned businesses, as well as fresh produce from local Black farmers. A mini-fridge will hold grab-and-go items like salads, eggs, and beverages from Black-owned brands. At the front of the trailer is a built-in food truck where chefs can rent the space to cook. The trailer is solar-powered and electric-run.

What they’re saying
“I found out that I was accepted the day — the literal day after George Floyd was murdered — and this thing that I was so excited about, I instantly stopped caring about it. In the back of my mind, I was just like, 'We need Black-owned grocery stores.'”
— Carmen Dianne, Co-founder, Prosperity Market
“When I found out that they were launching Prosperity Market with the truck, I desperately wanted to be a part of it. It's something that the neighborhood needs so much.”
— John Cleveland, Chef
“As a small Black business owner, it's a special feeling to have the support of another Black business that's doing something on a grander scale, to take me along with them and feature and support me, and bring my products to places that I never thought it could go.”
— Nikkia Johnson, Owner, Traquilitea herbal teas
What’s next
Prosperity Market plans to announce more stops for their mobile trailer on their website and Instagram. They also hope to eventually expand the fleet of trailers throughout California and then to their native Maryland.
The takeaway
Prosperity Market's mobile grocery trailer is a community-driven initiative to support Black-owned businesses and provide greater access to their products in Los Angeles. By championing Black-owned brands and local Black farmers, Prosperity Market is working to uplift the community and address the disproportionate impact the pandemic had on Black-owned businesses.
