As California's gubernatorial race heats up, the upcoming CNN debate offers voters a rare chance to directly assess the candidates vying to lead the nation's most populous state.Los Angeles TodayCNN will host a two-hour California gubernatorial primary debate on May 5th in Los Angeles, providing voters a critical opportunity to learn about the candidates seeking to lead the state. The debate will be moderated by CNN anchors Elex Michaelson and Kaitlan Collins, and will feature both Republican and Democratic contenders who have met the network's polling and fundraising requirements.
Why it matters
With California's liberal majority split among several Democratic candidates, and Republicans Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton currently leading in the polls, the CNN debate could play a pivotal role in shaping the state's June primary election. The debate comes after a previous gubernatorial primary debate hosted by USC was canceled amid controversy over the exclusion of candidates of color.
The details
To qualify for the CNN debate, candidates must have at least 3% support in two California gubernatorial polls or two statewide polls, and have raised at least $1 million for their campaign. As of April 6th, eight candidates have met the requirements, including Republicans Bianco and Hilton, and Democrats Eric Swalwell, Katie Porter, Tom Steyer, Xavier Becerra, Matt Mahan, and Antonio Villaraigosa. Two top Democratic contenders, Tony Thurmond and Betty Yee, have not yet qualified.
- The CNN debate will be held on May 5, 2026 at 6 p.m. PT.
- The eligibility window to receive an invitation to the debate will close on April 27, 2026.
