The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the Oscars ceremony will move from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to the larger Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles starting in 2029. The 10-year deal with venue operator AEG will give the academy access to the adjacent JW Marriott hotel and its ballroom, as well as other nearby hotels. The Peacock Theater has twice the seating capacity of the Dolby at around 7,000 seats.
Why it matters
The move to the Peacock Theater represents a significant change for the Oscars, which have been held at the Dolby Theatre (previously the Kodak Theatre) since 2002. The larger venue and additional event spaces will allow the academy to potentially expand the ceremony and related events. The move also returns the Oscars to downtown Los Angeles, where the awards were previously held at venues like the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Shrine Auditorium.
The details
As part of the 10-year deal, AEG plans extensive upgrades to the Peacock Theater, including new stage, sound and lighting systems, as well as renovations to lobbies, backstage areas, and other production-critical spaces. While the ceremony's look may not change drastically for viewers at home, attendees will no longer be able to walk outside onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame as they could at the Dolby Theatre.
- The Oscars ceremony will move to the Peacock Theater starting in 2029.
- The 2029 ceremony will be the 101st edition of the Oscars.
