Los Angeles police are asking for the public's help in identifying two suspects accused of carrying out a series of distraction-style identity thefts targeting elderly residents across Southern California. Detectives say the suspects work together to steal ATM cards from older victims and quickly withdraw funds from their accounts.
Why it matters
Crimes targeting vulnerable elderly residents are a growing concern, as seniors can be more susceptible to financial exploitation. This case highlights the need for increased public awareness and security measures to protect the elderly from such predatory scams.
The details
According to investigators, the pair typically targets elderly individuals while they are conducting transactions at ATMs. One suspect watches as the victim enters a personal identification number. That suspect then drops a $20 bill behind the victim and taps the person on the shoulder to point it out. When the victim turns to retrieve the money, the second suspect removes the ATM card from the machine and replaces it with a counterfeit card resembling the original. The victim unknowingly leaves with the fake card, while the suspects use the stolen card to withdraw thousands of dollars.
- On January 15, an 83-year-old man was targeted at an ATM in the 2100 block of Colorado Boulevard around 11:35 a.m.
- Around 1 p.m. the same day, the suspects were seen withdrawing money from the victim's account at a bank in the 800 block of North San Fernando Boulevard.
