Amoako Boafo Recreates His Accra Studio in Architectural Replica

The artist's stylized portraiture is embedded within the life-sized replica in Los Angeles gallery

Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo has recreated his Accra studio in an architectural reproduction within Roberts Projects' Los Angeles gallery. The exhibition, titled 'I Bring Home with Me', presents a collection of Boafo's signature stylized portraits of Black people embedded within the life-sized replica, created in collaboration with architect and designer Glenn DeRoche.

Why it matters

Boafo wanted to reflect the 'images, sounds, people, stories, and events that shape his sense of place' and how community gatherings in his studio are essential to his artistic process. The exhibition captures how presence and memories shape our inner and outer environments.

The details

The replica features details like monstera wallpaper, porous wall dividers, and floral seat covers that add color and texture, echoing Boafo's use of paper transfers, embroidered details, and thick impasto in his paintings. While some portraits depict imagined subjects, many portray friends, family, and public figures.

  • The exhibition 'I Bring Home with Me' is on view through March 21, 2026.
