iSeeCars, a data-driven car search and research company, looked at over 900,000 five- and 10-year-old used cars sold between July and December 2025 and the odometer readings of almost 400 million used cars. They compared the average list price of each model to its expected lifespan (in years) to calculate the list price per year, finding the Honda Fit and Nissan Leaf to be the most reliable used cars for the money.
Why it matters
With used car prices remaining high, reliability and remaining lifespan are the two most important factors to consider when buying a used vehicle. This data provides valuable insights for consumers looking to get the best value on a used car purchase.
The details
For five-year-old cars, the Honda Fit has an average one- to five-year-old used price of $18,445 and an expected remaining lifespan of 10.9 years, resulting in an annual cost of $1,693 per year. For 10-year-old cars, the Nissan Leaf has an average list price of $5,675 and an expected remaining lifespan of 5.1 years, with a price per remaining year of $1,108. However, the Tesla Model S is considered the best 10-year-old used car option, with a higher price but over twice the remaining lifespan compared to the Leaf.

Karl Brauer
The Executive Analyst at iSeeCars who provided insights on the study's findings.
Honda Fit
The most reliable five-year-old used car for the money, with an average price of $18,445 and an expected remaining lifespan of 10.9 years.
Nissan Leaf
The most reliable 10-year-old used car for the money, with an average price of $5,675 and an expected remaining lifespan of 5.1 years.
Tesla Model S
Considered the best 10-year-old used car option, with a higher price but over twice the remaining lifespan compared to the Nissan Leaf.
What they’re saying
“The Nissan Leaf is the lowest-priced model in the 10-year list, but with a 5.1-year predicted remaining lifespan, buyers need to go into a Leaf purchase knowing it's not a long-term solution. Buyers seeking a longer-term EV option should consider the Tesla Model S, which costs almost three times as much as the Leaf but has over twice the remaining lifespan.”
— Karl Brauer, Executive Analyst, iSeeCars (iSeeCars)
“The average 1- to 5-year-old used car still costs more than $30,000, or 50% more than they did five years ago. And even 10-year-old used cars average more than $14,000 in cost, making reliability and remaining lifespan the two most important factors to consider when buying a used vehicle.”
— Karl Brauer, Executive Analyst, iSeeCars (iSeeCars)
The takeaway
With used car prices remaining high, this data provides valuable insights for consumers looking to get the best value on a used car purchase by prioritizing reliability and remaining lifespan over just the upfront cost.
