Bishop Amat's boys soccer team had won 15 consecutive playoff games, but their streak came to an end on Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Los Alamitos in the CIF State Southern California Division III Regional final. The Griffins scored two unanswered goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead, and while Bishop Amat got a goal back in the second half, they were unable to find the equalizer.
Why it matters
Bishop Amat had been one of the most dominant teams in the playoffs over the past two seasons, winning two CIF Southern Section titles and one CIF State regional title. Their 15-game winning streak was a testament to the legacy set by the team's senior class, making this loss particularly disappointing for the program.
The details
Los Alamitos (18-15-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Ethan Phung scored on the rebound of a free kick. Phung then added a second goal in the 45th minute to make it 2-0. Bishop Amat (27-5-3) got a goal back in the 48th minute when Dylan Gonzalez scored, but they were unable to find the equalizer despite some late pressure. The Griffins were able to hold on for the 2-1 victory.

What they’re saying
“It's an 80 minute game. We played about 30 minutes of an 80 minute game. At these types of games, you got to put together a full match. And we didn't do that today.”

The takeaway

This loss will only fuel their desire to continue that success in the future.
