Kyle Kirkwood rebounded from a mistake in qualifying that cost him a spot in the fast six and slow pit stops to win the inaugural Arlington GP on Sunday. Kirkwood passed Alex Palou with 16 laps remaining and then held off a late caution to claim his third straight street course victory and take the early lead in the IndyCar championship.
Why it matters
Kirkwood's win continues his strong start to the season and establishes him as an early title contender. The Andretti driver has now won three of the last four street course races dating back to last year, showcasing his skills on the tight, technical circuits that make up a significant portion of the IndyCar schedule.
The details
Kirkwood chased down Palou following the duo's final pit stops, passing him in one of the last major braking zones on the 2.73-mile street course. Once in the lead, Kirkwood began to pull away, but a late caution for a crash by Christian Rasmussen erased his 8-second advantage and set up a one-lap shootout. Kirkwood held firm on the restart to claim the victory, with Nolan Siegel and Roman Grosjean colliding before the finish line.
- Kirkwood passed Palou for the lead with 16 laps remaining.
- The first caution of the race came out with 5 laps to go for Rasmussen's crash.
