On Friday, Stanford baseball fell to Cal State Fullerton at home by a final score of 4-2. Fullerton left fielder Britton Beeson hit a solo home run, and the Titans' pitching staff held the Cardinal to just two runs despite Stanford loading the bases with no outs in the 7th inning. Stanford head coach David Esquer was encouraged by the pitching performance but disappointed in the team's inability to execute at the plate with the bases loaded.
Why it matters
This was an important early-season matchup between two competitive baseball programs. The loss drops Stanford to 2-3 on the year, while Cal State Fullerton improves to 2-3. The Cardinal's struggles at the plate and in the field will be a focus as they look to bounce back in the rest of the series.
The details

Stanford got on the board in the 5th when JJ Moran hit a solo shot, but Fullerton added another run in the 7th to make it 4-2. The Cardinal had a golden opportunity in the 7th with the bases loaded and no outs, but could only manage one run, a disappointing outcome.

The players
Britton Beeson
Fullerton's left fielder who hit a solo home run in the 4th inning.
David Esquer
Stanford's head coach who was encouraged by the pitching performance but disappointed in the team's inability to capitalize with the bases loaded.
Nick Dugan
Stanford's starting pitcher who gave up two earned runs and four hits while striking out five in 5.1 innings.
What they’re saying
“You know what, we just, again, you know, all our losses, we've probably given a little bit more than we received, right? So like, that's a, I guess that's neighborly, right? You give more than you receive, but that's not good when you're competing in a game of baseball or any, or probably any sport.”
— David Esquer, Stanford Head Coach
“Yeah, you know what, he's been a bright spot offensively and has looked comfortable at the plate. You know, in a lineup that, you know, it hasn't been as comfortable as we'd like, you know, as far as in the middle of the zone. I think our one through five today was 3-for-16. That makes it a little tough, right? I mean, I think that's, we need a lot more production from that part of the order if we're gonna be the team we want to be.”
— David Esquer, Stanford Head Coach
“You know, bases loaded, nobody out, and we only get one, right? I mean, that's probably a spot where we've gotta do a better job of scoring more runs and so that was unfortunate.”
— David Esquer, Stanford Head Coach
What’s next
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 12:05 PM PT and the second game beginning at 3:05 PM PT or 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
The takeaway
This loss highlights the need for Stanford to improve its offensive production, particularly from the middle of the order, and clean up the defensive miscues that have plagued the team early in the season. If the Cardinal can shore up those areas, they will be better positioned to compete with top opponents like Cal State Fullerton going forward.
