The small home model for senior living is gaining traction as an alternative to large, institutional facilities. Wellpointe Inc., a California-based provider, has opened 67 small assisted living homes across the state, offering a more intimate, home-like setting with higher staff-to-resident ratios. The model aims to address the growing need for affordable senior care options as costs rise at larger communities. While the small home approach faces perception challenges, Wellpointe has worked to professionalize operations and build trust in local communities.
Why it matters
The small home model provides an affordable alternative to traditional senior living, particularly for older adults on fixed incomes. By offering a more home-like environment with personalized care, the model seeks to address the evolving preferences of aging populations who want to avoid the institutional feel of larger facilities. As costs rise at larger communities, the small home approach could become an increasingly important option for seniors.
The details
Wellpointe Inc. opened Fresno Guest Home #28, a 2,600-square-foot residence with six private bedrooms and five bathrooms, as part of its network of 40 small assisted living homes in the Fresno area. The homes feature expanded living and dining spaces, updated kitchens, and outdoor areas. Staffing is a key component, with at least one staff member present for every six residents at all times to provide a "high-touch" care experience. Wellpointe coordinates a range of services beyond daily assistance, including primary care, specialty providers, home health, pharmacy support, and mobile lab services.
