A 22-year-old Los Angeles man has been arrested and charged with burglary, conspiracy, grand theft, and a gang enhancement for allegedly stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of marijuana from a Carpinteria-area cannabis grow last month. Detectives coordinated with the LAPD and executed search warrants that led to the recovery of firearms, cash, and additional processed cannabis.

Why it matters

This case highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating organized cannabis farm burglaries, which have become a growing problem in California's Central Coast region as the legal cannabis industry continues to evolve. The recovery of firearms also raises concerns about the potential for violence associated with these types of crimes.

The details

On January 17, deputies responded to a report of a burglary that had just occurred at a cannabis grow in the 4000 block of Foothill Road in Carpinteria. The suspects fled before deputies arrived. Detectives identified 22-year-old Dvaryae Bryant as a suspect and coordinated with the LAPD, which was conducting a parallel investigation. Detectives arrested Bryant at his residence in Los Angeles, where they recovered a short-barrel assault rifle that he allegedly threw from a window. Detectives and LAPD officers later served an additional search warrant in Hawthorne and recovered approximately 15 pounds of processed cannabis, additional firearms, and thousands in cash.
