Four years after first announcing plans to adapt the popular Inheritance Cycle book series, Disney+ has assembled a creative team to bring the Eragon story to the small screen. The series will be co-created by author Christopher Paolini and writer Todd Harthan, who will also serve as co-showrunners. They will be joined by executive producer Marc Webb, known for directing The Amazing Spider-Man films.
Why it matters
The Eragon book series has a devoted fanbase that has been waiting decades for a faithful adaptation after the poorly received 2006 film. Disney+'s development of the series signals the streamer's continued commitment to bringing beloved fantasy franchises to life and giving them the proper treatment they deserve.
The details
The Inheritance Cycle follows Eragon, a farm boy who discovers a dragon egg that hatches into a dragon named Saphira. Eragon and Saphira set out to take down the tyrannical king Galbatorix and free the land of Alagaesia. The 2006 Eragon film adaptation was widely panned by critics, leading to the cancellation of any planned sequels. Disney+ is now hoping to right the wrongs of the past with a new TV series adaptation that will hopefully capture the magic of the original books.
