Covestro displayed several new medical devices at the MD&M West trade show, highlighting the company's expertise in advanced materials for healthcare applications. This included the SoundHeart electronic stethoscope, the EZfuser non-electric infusion system, and the Maestro demonstration device showcasing in-mold structural electronics and low-fluorescence polycarbonate. Covestro also launched new medical-grade thermoplastic polyurethane films for applications like smart insoles and wearable devices.
Why it matters
Covestro's material innovations are enabling the development of more accessible, durable, and technologically advanced medical devices for both home healthcare and harsh environments like the battlefield. These advancements can improve patient outcomes and expand access to critical health monitoring and treatment, especially for underserved populations.
The details
The SoundHeart electronic stethoscope, developed by startup Korion Health, uses Covestro's Makrolon 2458 polycarbonate to provide impact resistance and dimensional stability for in-home use. The EZfuser non-electric infusion system, created by MonuMedical in partnership with the U.S. Air Force, also leverages Makrolon Rx2530 polycarbonate for durability in harsh conditions. Covestro's own Maestro demonstration device showcases the company's advanced materials, including in-mold structural electronics and low-fluorescence polycarbonate for improved performance of point-of-care devices. Additionally, Covestro launched new medical-grade Dureflex MA5000 thermoplastic polyurethane films for applications like IV securement dressings and smart insoles.
- The SoundHeart device has been submitted to the FDA for 510(k) clearance.
- The EZfuser infusion system is expected to launch in the U.S. this year and be available to NATO partner countries in 2027.
