The next-generation Alpine A110 sports car will debut later this year with an all-electric powertrain, but the platform is designed to also accommodate an internal combustion engine version, according to Alpine CEO Philippe Krief. The new 'Alpine Performance Platform' aims to offer the "first true EV sportscar" while maintaining flexibility to react to future market and regulatory changes.
Why it matters
The ability to offer both electric and gas-powered versions of the A110 gives Alpine more options to sell the sports car in different global markets, especially where electrification demands are not as advanced. This platform flexibility could help Alpine expand the A110's reach and competitiveness.
The details
The new A110 EV will feature a dual-motor, rear-wheel drive powertrain and a 40:60 front-to-rear weight distribution thanks to separate battery packs. It will have an aluminum suspension, integrated braking and steering systems, and a low, 'Formula 1-inspired' driving position. While an ICE version is not confirmed, the platform's adaptability means Alpine can react to changes in emissions and powertrain regulations.

The players
Philippe Krief
CEO of Alpine, the French automaker that is developing the next-generation A110 sports car.
Renault Group
The parent company of Alpine, which has a future plan called 'Futuready' that is guiding the development of the new A110 platform.
What they’re saying
“We will offer the first true EV sportscar to the market. It will be true to Alpine's DNA and outperform the best of today's combustion sports cars, thanks to the Alpine Performance Platform.”
— Philippe Krief, CEO, Alpine
“Yes, the platform is designed to accommodate an internal combustion engine. The goal of Futuready (Renault Group's future plan) is to be prepared for the future, so we have developed the platform to receive an ICE.”
— Philippe Krief, CEO, Alpine
What’s next
Alpine has not confirmed if an internal combustion engine version of the next-generation A110 will be produced, but the flexibility of the new platform means the company can react to changes in emissions regulations and customer demands in different global markets.
The takeaway
Alpine's approach with the next A110 demonstrates how automakers are balancing the transition to electric vehicles while maintaining flexibility to cater to diverse market needs. The ability to offer both EV and ICE versions on the same platform could help Alpine expand the sports car's appeal and competitiveness.
