Feb. 5, 2026 at 5:07pm

Starting on February 6, 2026, the CAL FIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit will assist with Phase 2 of an 8-acre prescribed burn near the town of Adin along the Lassen-Modoc County line. This is part of a larger multi-year project to conduct controlled burns in the area based on identified land management needs.

Why it matters

Prescribed burns are an important tool used by CAL FIRE to reduce hazardous fuels, improve ecosystem health, and enhance public safety in fire-prone regions of California. This specific project is part of a long-term effort to proactively manage vegetation and mitigate wildfire risk in the Lassen-Modoc area.

The details

The prescribed burn will only be ignited when conditions are favorable for a safe, low-intensity fire. Smoke will be visible throughout the Big Valley area during the burn operations, but this is a planned and permitted project, so there is no need for residents to report the smoke to 911.

  • The prescribed burn will begin on Friday, February 6, 2026.
  • This is Phase 2 of the overall project, with different portions of the 8-acre treatment area being burned over time.
