On the corner of Speedway and Main Avenue in Tucson, a new hot dog spot called Hotdogs 501 has opened, born from more than a year of hands-on construction, family labor, and a deeply personal vision. Owners Luis and Sinthia Nolasco have created a restaurant that pays tribute to their family's legacy of food and hospitality, serving up Sonoran-style hot dogs with fresh, high-quality ingredients and a focus on great customer service.
Why it matters
Hotdogs 501 represents the entrepreneurial spirit and community-driven values of Tucson's food scene, as the Nolascos have poured their heart and soul into creating a unique dining experience that celebrates their family's heritage and the local culture. In an era of chain restaurants, Hotdogs 501 stands out as an independent, mission-driven business committed to quality ingredients, exceptional service, and honoring the Sonoran culinary tradition.
The details
Hotdogs 501 officially opened on October 4th, but the journey began long before that for the Nolascos. Luis Nolasco taught himself welding and handled much of the buildout himself, waiting to open until the space matched his vision. The location on Main Avenue was an unexpected choice, so the team handed out free hot dogs during rush hour to introduce the restaurant to the community. Nolasco's hot dog journey started with a cart he bought in 2000 that sat in his backyard for 15 years until his wife challenged him to turn it into a business. They set up on Fourth Avenue, serving late-night crowds, before finding the perfect permanent home on Main Avenue.

What they’re saying
“It was four walls and a door. We drywalled, we did all the electrical, we did all the concrete staining. I built all the tables myself with my kids.”
— Luis Nolasco, Owner, Hotdogs 501 (tucsonfoodie.com)
“We would sit out there with signs. We gave out free hot dogs at rush hour, we were like, 'Here, free samples. Come and check us out.'”
— Luis Nolasco, Owner, Hotdogs 501 (tucsonfoodie.com)
“My dad was strict about treating customers with respect and appreciation. These people go out and work hard, and they decide to come and spend the money here with us. You better put on a smile. You better say thank you and you better treat these people well.”
