The Pima County Sheriff's Department said investigators have "recovered several items of evidence, including gloves," that are being submitted for analysis as the search for Nancy Guthrie continues. Authorities have received over 18,000 tips since Guthrie's disappearance on February 1, with more than 4,000 coming after the release of surveillance footage showing an "armed individual" near her home. FBI agents have conducted extensive searches in the Catalina Foothills area near Guthrie's residence, but no suspects have been publicly identified.
Why it matters
The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, has garnered national attention and raised concerns about public safety in the Tucson area. Authorities believe Guthrie may have been targeted, though her high-profile connection to her daughter has not been ruled out as a potential motive. The recovery of physical evidence, such as the gloves, could provide crucial clues to help solve the case.
The details
In three separate incidents since July, police said Walker Reed Quinn has been damaging Waymo vehicles by removing and swinging his belt, placing a cone on the dome and sensors of the car, damaging the tires and driver's side mirror, and stomping on the windshield. Authorities changed Quinn with several incidents that have resulted in extensive property damage, a perceived risk to public safety, and ongoing questions about the perpetrator's mental health.
- On February 8, detectives continue follow-up work at multiple locations, and an investigator is seen using a pole to search in a septic tank behind Nancy Guthrie's home.
- On February 9, the FBI says it isn't aware of any communication between the Guthrie family and possible kidnappers, despite a 5 p.m. ransom deadline set for that evening.
- On February 10, the FBI releases a video and images of what it says is 'an armed individual' appearing to tamper with a doorbell camera at Nancy Guthrie's home in the early morning hours of February 1.
- On February 11, investigators widen their search outside of Nancy Guthrie's home in the Catalina Foothills, and FBI agents recover a pair of black gloves that are being tested for traces of DNA.
- On February 12, police ask Nancy Guthrie's neighbors to check their home security footage from January 11 and January 31.
