The Milwaukee Brewers and All-Star catcher William Contreras have agreed to a one-year, $9.4 million contract just before an arbitration hearing. The deal includes a $14.5 million team option for 2027 that could convert to a mutual option if Contreras finishes in the top 4 of NL MVP voting this season.
Why it matters
Contreras is a key part of the Brewers' lineup and has been an All-Star the past two seasons. Locking him up on a one-year deal with a team option for 2027 gives the Brewers cost certainty and flexibility as they look to make another run at the NL Central title.
The details
The $9.4 million contract is $175,000 above the midpoint between Contreras' $9.9 million request and the team's $8.55 million offer. This is the second straight year Contreras has agreed to a deal just before an arbitration hearing. In 2025, he hit .260 with 17 homers and 76 RBIs while dealing with a fractured finger for much of the season.
- The deal was reached on Thursday, February 13, 2026, just before the scheduled start of an arbitration hearing in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The players
William Contreras
A two-time All-Star catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers who was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Braves in December 2022.
Milwaukee Brewers
The National League Central division baseball team that Contreras plays for, having won the division title the past three seasons.
What’s next
The Brewers will look to Contreras to continue being a key offensive contributor as they aim for their fourth straight NL Central title in 2026.
The takeaway
The Brewers were able to avoid an arbitration hearing and lock up their All-Star catcher William Contreras on a one-year deal with a team option for 2027, providing cost certainty and flexibility as they build their roster for another playoff run.
