Five years ago today, on February 9, 2021, Richie Albright, the longtime drummer and close friend of outlaw country legend Waylon Jennings, passed away at the age of 81. Albright was an original member of Jennings' band, the Waylors, and his four-on-the-floor drumbeat was the backbone of Jennings' signature sound. The two shared an incredible musical chemistry that helped shape the outlaw country genre.
Why it matters
Richie Albright was more than just Waylon Jennings' drummer - he was an integral creative partner who helped define the outlaw country sound that Jennings became famous for. Albright's death marks the passing of a true pioneer of the genre and a key figure in country music history.
The details
Albright was featured in the Country Music Hall of Fame's Nashville Cats series, where he revealed how he came to be Jennings' drummer and right-hand man. 'I don't know whether the official thing ever came around,' Albright said jokingly when asked how Jennings made him an official member of the band. 'Waylon was so spontaneous. We didn't rehearse...we just did it. He never named songs. You just wait for that guitar to take off. Then, you jump in there and hang on.' Albright said their musical chemistry was instant, recalling a performance of the Rolling Stones' 'Mona' where they 'just went into a riff that was exactly together.'

“About four or five months in, we were doing 'Mona,' a Rolling Stones tune, just ripping it up. It was tight, and we were just going. All of a sudden, we both just went into a riff that was exactly together. We looked at one another and went 'Yeah!'”
