The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is starting or resuming six highway improvement projects across Northern Arizona, with work beginning as early as March 29. The projects focus on safety upgrades, sidewalk and crosswalk improvements, and pavement resurfacing along major routes like Interstate 17, State Route 87, State Route 89A, Interstate 40, State Route 64, and US Route 160.
Why it matters
These infrastructure projects aim to enhance safety, accessibility, and road conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and wildlife across Northern Arizona's highways. As the state experiences an early spring heatwave, ADOT is taking advantage of the favorable weather to kickstart these critical maintenance and upgrade efforts.
The details
The projects include: installing 8 miles of new wildlife fencing along I-17 near Flagstaff, resuming a $12.2 million sidewalk and pavement resurfacing project on SR 87 in Payson, replacing guardrails and adding concrete barriers on the SR 89A switchbacks in Oak Creek Canyon, resurfacing multiple segments of I-40, resurfacing 19 miles of SR 64 between I-40 and Pipeline Road, and improving pavement on a 14-mile stretch of US 160 east of Tuba City.
- The projects will begin as early as March 29, 2026.
- Most of the work is scheduled to be completed by fall 2026, with the SR 64 project extending into fall 2027.

What’s next
Drivers should check ADOT's website and social media channels for the latest updates on lane restrictions, road closures, and project timelines as the work progresses over the coming months.
The takeaway
These infrastructure upgrades across Northern Arizona's highways demonstrate ADOT's commitment to improving road safety, accessibility, and conditions for both drivers and pedestrians. The projects will require patience from travelers, but the end result will be smoother, safer roads that benefit the entire region.
