Zac Gallen, one of the top remaining free agent pitchers, said it would be "awesome" to re-sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gallen, a 2023 All-Star, is coming off a disappointing 2025 season but finished strong. The Diamondbacks have discussed a reunion with Gallen, who said the support from the fanbase has left a lasting impression.
Why it matters
Retaining Gallen would be a big boost for the Diamondbacks as they look to build on an offseason in which they kept star infielder Ketel Marte and added veteran hitters Carlos Santana and Nolan Arenado. Gallen's potential return would solidify the team's starting rotation.
The details
Gallen, 30, was acquired by the Diamondbacks in a 2019 trade with the Marlins. He had a breakout 2022 season, going 12-4 with a 2.54 ERA, and made the National League All-Star team in 2023. However, he struggled in 2025, going 13-15 with a 4.83 ERA, though he pitched better in the second half. Gallen declined the Diamondbacks' $22.025 million qualifying offer, which would have entitled the team to draft-pick compensation if he signed elsewhere.
- Gallen spoke to reporters on Tuesday at the WM Phoenix Open.
- Pitchers and catchers are set to report to spring training next week.
