According to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates, small counties in the coastal Southeast had some of the largest population gains between mid-2024 and mid-2025, mostly due to people moving from larger areas. Jasper County, South Carolina saw a 6% population increase, the fastest growth in the nation, as new residents moved in from states like New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Other fast-growing counties were on the outskirts of major metro areas like Dallas, Atlanta, and Denver.

Why it matters

The population surges in these small Southeast counties highlight broader migration trends, as people seek more affordable housing, lower costs of living, and access to recreation and amenities outside of major urban centers.
