North Carolina has landed a commitment from Sheridan tailback Isaiah Stephens, a talented in-state prospect who never received an offer from Arkansas during Bobby Petrino's two-year tenure as head coach. Petrino's hands-off approach with Stephens is emblematic of the Razorbacks' recent struggles to recruit top local talent, as the program finished near the bottom of the SEC in recruiting rankings during Petrino's time in Fayetteville.
Why it matters
Arkansas has long struggled to keep the state's top high school football players home, and the Stephens recruitment is the latest example. Petrino's lack of engagement with the talented running back, even after taking the offensive coordinator job at North Carolina, raises questions about his recruiting prowess and the Razorbacks' ability to develop relationships with in-state prospects.
The details
Stephens, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound tailback, committed to North Carolina on March 28 after a standout junior season in which he ran for 1,303 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had offers from Mississippi, Purdue and SMU, but never received one from Arkansas, even after Ryan Silverfield replaced Sam Pittman as head coach. Ironically, Stephens' offensive coordinator at North Carolina will be Petrino, the same coach who didn't extend him an offer during his two years in Fayetteville. Petrino's football acumen is undisputed, but he doesn't exactly have a reputation as an elite recruiter, as the Razorbacks finished second-to-last in the SEC recruiting rankings during both of his two years in town.

A 5-foot-8, 175-pound tailback from Sheridan, Arkansas who committed to play for North Carolina.
Bobby Petrino
The offensive coordinator at North Carolina and former head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks from 2024 to 2025.
Bill Belichick
The head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, who has served as Stephens' lead recruiter despite being a defensive-minded coach.
Ryan Silverfield
The current head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, who replaced Sam Pittman.
Sam Pittman
The former head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, who was replaced by Ryan Silverfield.
What they’re saying
“We have a really good relationship. He's always excited to talk to me. Before I committed, he would always say, 'I want to show you how you would thrive in this offense.'”
— Isaiah Stephens, North Carolina Commit
“When Arkansas offered me, I was thrilled. I'm really excited to get down there and meet Coach Silverfield and all the other staff ... The coaches really stay in touch and always make sure I'm good and that's really important to me.”
— Jaxon Elston, Arkansas Offensive Line Recruit
“I've taken a lot from Jude and his game since we have similar frames, and I've applied his skillset to my game. I think Jude going to a school like Arkansas is a big move not only for him but for kids and athletes like myself who are interested in going farther from home.”
— Malachi Debnam, Arkansas Wide Receiver Recruit
What’s next
Arkansas will host a number of top recruits, including offensive lineman Jaxon Elston and wide receiver Malachi Debnam, on campus this Saturday as they look to build momentum in the 2027 recruiting class.
The takeaway
The Stephens recruitment highlights the ongoing challenges Arkansas faces in keeping the state's top high school talent home. Petrino's hands-off approach with the Sheridan standout is emblematic of the Razorbacks' recent struggles on the recruiting trail, an issue new head coach Ryan Silverfield will need to address to get the program back on track.
